Frequently asked questions
What is WIRE?
WIRE is a tech newsstand — a fast, beautifully designed reader for the day's technology news. It's built around a front page you scroll and a card deck you swipe, so you can get through the headlines in a couple of minutes instead of scrolling forever.
How does the Deck work?
Tap the yellow button in the centre of the tab bar to open the Deck. Each story appears as a card: swipe right to read it (it opens the full article), or swipe left to skipto the next one. You can also use the SKIP and READ buttons at the bottom if you prefer tapping. It's the fastest way to triage the day.
Do I need an account?
No. WIRE has no sign-up and no login. Open it and start reading — your bookmarks and settings are kept privately on your own device.
How do I save a story for later?
Tap the bookmark icon on any story — in the feed, in the article itself, or in the story list. Saved stories live in the Saved tab. To remove one, tap the bookmark again or swipe the row to the left.
Can I read offline?
Yes. Turn on Offline reading in You → Settings. Your saved stories are then downloaded in the background when you open the app, so you can read them on a plane or with no signal. Articles you've already opened are also kept for offline reading automatically.
How do I change the language?
Go to You → Settings → Language. You can set the app language (English, Français, or العربية — Arabic switches the whole layout to right-to-left) and, separately, the language you want to read articles in. Both apply instantly.
How do I switch between light and dark mode?
Go to You → Settings → Appearance and pick Light, Dark, or Auto(which follows your phone's system setting). You can also change the reading text size just below, under Reading.
The text is too small / too large.
Open You → Settings → Reading → Text sizeand choose Compact, Standard, or Comfort. WIRE also respects your phone's system accessibility text-size setting.
Stories aren't loading.
Check your internet connection first — WIRE needs one to fetch new stories. If you're connected and still see an error, pull down on the feed to refresh, or tap RETRY on the message. If it persists, close and reopen the app, and email us if it's still stuck.
How do I share an article?
Open any story and tap the share icon at the top right, or SHARE in the bar at the bottom. Your phone's normal share sheet appears, so you can send the article to any app you like.
Can I zoom into an image?
Yes — tap any image in an article to open it full screen. From there you can pinch to zoom, drag to pan, or double-tap to zoom in and out.
Why does WIRE show ads?
WIRE is free to read, and ads are what keep it that way — they pay for the app and its development. We keep them out of the way of the story: you won't find ads interrupting an article mid-sentence. There are currently no in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Can I stop seeing personalised ads?
Yes. Where consent is required (for example in the EEA and the UK), WIRE asks you on first launch and you can choose non-personalised ads— you can change that choice later in the app's settings. On iOS, if you decline the tracking prompt, ads are automatically non-personalised. You can also reset or limit your advertising ID in your device settings (Android: Settings → Google → Ads; iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Apple Advertising). Declining personalised ads doesn't cost you any features — you'll just see less relevant ads.
What data do the ads collect?
Ads are served by Google AdMob, which may process your advertising identifier, device type, coarse location from your IP address, and how you interacted with an ad. We ourselves collect no personal data and never sell your data. The full detail is in our Privacy Policy.
Do you send push notifications?
Not currently. The “Breaking alerts” switch in Settings saves your preference for a future update — WIRE does not send push notifications today, and it never registers your device for them without you knowing.
How do I delete my data?
Everything WIRE stores (bookmarks, settings, recent searches, offline articles) lives on your device only. Uninstalling the app removes all of it. We hold no account or profile of you on our servers. For the data processed by our advertising partner, see the ad questions above and our Privacy Policy.
